OTS offers High Voltage Cable testing. IEEE and NETA have approved a new, safe means for testing older cables 5KV, 15KV, and 35KV.  We use very low frequency (VLF) high voltage test instruments in conjunction with portable Tangent Delta or Tan Delta, measuring system that plots the cable performance versus test voltage as seen in the graph below.  IEEE and NETA both recommend the facility owners do not test existing cables over 5 years old with a DC Hi Pot tester at elevated voltages. VLF is the preferred new test method.

“It’s like an EKG test for underground cables.”

This is also a great test to establish a base line condition for new cables before energization.
